Stick-to-it-iveness!

So my dad is definitely a person with great "stick-to-it-iveness!"  My "simple and quick" rewiring job became a lot more complicated than I initially anticipated. But he worked on these suckers ALL DAY after Thanksgiving (he didn't want to go shopping anyway!) and we went from this (horrible, like even worse than how bad it looks in this picture):

To THIS!!! (painting was done by diligent husband and me in the 2+ weeks prior to Thanksgiving....planned on having the room done a week before company arrived...it was finished 10 minutes before picking up my sister and BIL from the airport!) The color is Valspar's Cooper Adobe Brown and it is AMAZING!!! Chocolate/grey/charcoal deliciousness..changes with the light and makes the space soooo cozy!  More photos of that later....

...But back to the TA-DA light fixtures:

The fixtures themselves were vintage finds that Jane snagged for me...who knows where she found them...but they originally looked like this:

The silver paint job wasn't the worst in the world, but it was inconsistently applied...and only on 3 of the 4...they're brass, so we took a wire brush drill bit to them (imprecisely, b/c I'm impatient).  Then, after hours and hours and hours of wiring and installing and going to the hardware store and trying to cobble pieces together to hold them to the ceiling which I won't elaborate on anymore here, but was a heck of a pain for my dad to do...), new bulbs were added to mix some mod in with the old. And to eliminate the need for globes or shades of any sort b/c most of them are ugly anyway.  I love them. I love my dad. The attic guest room thanks him!

My tree is decked in nothing but lights....

...but am I spending my Saturday decking it with vintage ornaments? No. I'm listing stuff in the Etsy store for your vintage shopping pleasure while the dogs nap in the recently completed guest room/attic. Lazy butts.

I have so much awesome stuff, it just needed to find its way into the store before Christmas!  You're welcome.

A few sneak peeks:

So Many Pretty Things!

Lots of new stuff in the shop!! Check it out!

When Half the Wood is Ugly...

...paint the other half!

How to:
*sand
*apply tung oil
*allow to dry
*cut stencils out of CONTACT PAPER! I free handed a peony.  Do something you like. Please try not to be too trendy *says the girl with the MINT coffee table* (btw, if i called it sorbet green would it be less trendy than "mint?")
(this can be simple or extremely complicated, depending on how fancy you want to get w/ your design.  hint:  use a large piece of glass and a marker to see what your design will look like on top of your piece of furniture.  then trace these patterns onto smaller pieces of paper..which can then be traced up against a lit window onto contact paper).
*stick design to wood surface directly--RUB edges down really, really hard! Be careful to avoid any areas where the wood ain't so pretty (like the parts of this table that you can't see, where i sanded too far and hit particle board...the wood on this piece is just a layer of veneer).
*paint with several coats of something pretty like this mint paint
*peel up contact paper.
*cover entire piece with some sort of clear coat (i still haven't done this..worried about yellowing the paint :/)

Curtain Dilemma

I spent hours and hours at a zillion JoAnn fabrics stores to get off-white linen fabric for my curtains...to go something like this:

For my bedroom..which is looking like this:
But now I'm afraid the off-white (nearly white) linen I bought is going to make it look too nautical...in spite of the pale lavender ceiling and coral tufted headboard (in the works).  So now I'm considering returning the fabric (I've been told you can return cut fabric to JoAnns) and using something else entirely...lavender fabric with a sheen to it? ick. no. something w/ a pattern like below?...or dying it (lavender? coral?) What to do?!?!
I'm really loving these right now....
I'm on a lavender restriction for the house from John, but I told him the curtains may just have to be lavender...he seemed to take it okay.  Curtains probably shouldn't do this to me:
Thoughts?

Etsy Shop Update!

So I finally figured out how to get my Etsy shop's "about page" to go live! Yay!  Etsy has reformatted some things for a cleaner, seller-focused experience.  The "about page" link now appears at the bottom of each listing. You can see it here...hopefully I'll have more "process" photos soon...although, photos of the chaos that is my basement Etsy storage should probably never be seen! ha.

Which One is Not Like the Others?

So the gallery of flowers is now done. For now.  Pretty proud of the fact that this went up only a week and a half after completing the rest of the room. Progress.  Not exactly how I imagined it...but I figured SOMETHING on the wall is better than waiting for the perfect 20 pieces to assemble themselves (years) with nothing on the wall. It's actually growing on me, I think.

A Room Nearly Done....or, The Reason I Live for Holidays!

Thank goodness for Independence Day! I'm not sure how anyone got anything done before 1776!  But, because of a revolutionary celebratory day off, I was able to finish painting a room that I started painting on Memorail Day! (Don't bother counting the weeks..it was a lot. A lot of weeks of an unfinished room and ladders and drop cloths and mess!) Are you sensing a theme? Yes, prepare to not see another house update until Labor Day, people!  Hopefully this will tide you over (tie you over?) 'til then!

The *nearly complete Front Room:

*still to do: hang art above couch, finish mint coffee table awesomeness (half done in the basement), find something cool to go in the empty fireplace.

help?

why are my paragraphs in the previous post so wonky..w/ the right side cut off?!

sneak peek....Front Room Painting Amazingness!

Here are a few pictures of the front room.  I still need to finish a second coat of edging along the top of the wall...and the ceiling medallion is clearly not done....and then something must be done about those windows...I'd love to leave them open but we need a tad of privacy at night...still working on that...but anyway, you get the gist!

Before:
I can't take credit for the crown molding repair in left corner...the previous owner was sweet enough to come back  after we moved in to repair!

Mirror is too small, but will have to do for now...once painted, it will be rehung vertically, not horizontally.

Couch of awesomeness from Christina

Original c. 1879 floor to ceiling mirror frame turned bookshelf turned pottery collection home. Also, note the not so awesome light fixture...for now I've removed the frosted globes and replaced the small candle flame shaped bulbs with large round ones and no globes.

awesome fireplace
and.......................................................................................
After:
Thought about doing the back of the bookshelf orange-y/red like the medallion, but I painted a few shelves worth and thought that might have been too much.

It's so lovely in the natural sunlight...and this is only half as much light as it gets at the best times of day!

Unfinished ceiling medallion.  I could be on a 11' ladder right now, taking care of that, but I decided to blog these pictures instead! You're welcome.

Fireplace interior is still blue.  Not sure yet what  it should be--the medallion color? Black? Cream like the crown molding? Mint green? Vote now in the comments section!

Yes. That orange-y woodwork was BEGGING to be surrounded by lavender. Don'tcha think?!

A very unfinished paint job on the "Good enough for now, until the Craigslist gods smile down on me" Mirror

And here is where I tell you what colors I used:  Walls - Valspar Glass Slipper (flat); Crown Molding - Valspar Churchill Hotel Navajo White (gloss); Ceiling - Valspar Lilac Lace (made with ceiling paint base, flatter than flat); Ceiling Medallion - Valspar Glowing Firelight (gloss).

Again, still need to mop the floors, change the curtains, move the dang orange chair, add awesome art to the walls, but you get the idea!

Further Plans:
*New curtains: Probably sheer-ish and removeable..like those nifty 2-tension rod, adjustable faux roman blinds that I saw in a MSL mag not long ago. Sound goofy? Trust. Photos eventually.

UPDATE: The internet is great. Here is a photo. Just imagine this in a nicer fabric.

*Swap out the giant teal trunk for the low square wooden coffee table in the other room...probably will paint it high gloss mint green like my nails. Kinda like so:

Trendy, but easily changed. and DANG lavender, fire orange, and mint just look so happy together! Okay, so I thought that was a real thing and just searched Pinterest for an image to prove it, but no luck. So I guess it's not a thing. Which means maybe that buys me another year or so of non-overdoneness as I rock a mint coffee table in my lavender and fire-y orange room. I could take a picture of my chippy, paint covered manicure next to the lavender and orange room for you, but I'm too lazy. Again, trust.
